Carousel August 1 – 10, 2014
Directed by Tracey Williams Sutton
Ojai Art Center
113 S. Montgomery St. Ojai
This is Richard Rodgers’ favorite musical and his second collaboration with Oscar Hammerstein which was named the Best Musical of the 20th century by Time Magazine. A powerful story of love and tragedy between a millworker and a Carousel barker, it hits all the right notes with songs such as “If I Loved You” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone.”
Ojai Art Center
Venice Institute of Contemporary Art (ViCA) and Porch Gallery Ojai in Association with the Sam Francis Foundation Present “Water Works” August 1 -17, 2014
Curated by Juri Koll with Catalog Essays by Peter Frank & Shana Nys Dambrot
Featuring works by The Dark Bob, Fatemeh Burnes, Sam Erenberg, Kio Griffith, Gloriane Harris, Juri Koll, Barbara Kolo, KuBO, Jayme Odgers, Kirk Pedersen, Kate Register, and Karrie Ross.
The artists in this show use watercolor, inks, and other liquid media for a variety of reasons – some love the risk of not being able to alter the result once it hits the paper. Others have a more formal reason for the process. Some use the medium as a contemplative, almost reverential experience, or for “quiet meditation or being present in the moment”, as Shana Nys Dambrot says. All these motivations inspire these works, and engage the audience with the here and now, regardless of when the work was completed. Many of the artists have been influenced in some way by Japanese Sumi painters or modern artists such as Sam Francis.

Cycles and Spires Featuring paintings by James Wills and sculpture by Elisa Berry Fonseca
August 9 – September 14, 2014
Opening Reception August 9, 2014 from 5 – 7 pm
galerie102 is pleased to present Cycles and Spires featuring paintings by James Wills and sculpture by Elisa Berry Fonseca. Cycles and Spires opens August 9, 2014 with an artists’ reception from 5-7pm and is on view through September 14, 2014. Cycles and Spires explores the cyclical nature of life and death through continual motion in different mediums. Tall felt spires magically emerge from the ground – sturdy but delicate – they undulate towards one another in a dance of striated color – creating a surreal, treelike landscape. A triptych of large black and white paintings form the Holy Trinity: sub-titled Father, Son and Holy Ghost from traditional Christian doctrine – but here representing the oneness of all life that cycles through spirals of black into white, and eventually, into edges of color.

“Of Mice and Men” August 29 – September 21, 2014
Ojai Art Center
113 S. Montgomery St. Ojai
Directed by Rick Kuhlman
John Steinbeck’s brilliant novel was turned into a play while still on the best seller list and it won the highest honor of its time. The story of a deep friendship among migrant workers who dream of a better life, but are thwarted by prejudice and cruelty, still resonates in today’s world. It came from Steinbeck’s own experience as a ‘hobo’ (HOmeward BOund).

Fresh Roasted Concerts Eric Bibb
Friday, September 12, 2014 @ 7:30pm
Matilija Auditorium, Ojai
A performance by Eric Bibb is an enriching experience – both musically and spiritually. Purveying a beautifully realized and deftly accomplished, soulful and gospel infused, folk-blues, Eric has no problem melding a traditional rootsy American style with a subtle contemporary sensibility. As one critic wrote, “Eric’s singing and versatile guitar playing fuses a variety of genres to become a New World Blues.” Bibb’s rich and sensitive vocals and lyrics provide a perfect balance to his fine finger picking technique. For four decades, singer-songwriter-guitarist Eric Bibb has criss-crossed the globe, captivating live audiences by bearing witness to the infinite complexities of the human experience – both the mundane and the spiritual – with music that’s steeped in the tradition of American blues and layered with generous shades of folk and gospel. He is, in every respect, a modern-day troubadour – heir to the legacy of Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Odetta and countless other great voices of the early and mid-20th century.
